Everything You Need to Know About Skip Bin Hire

Are you in need of skip bins in Melbourne? If so, there are a few things you should know before the skip bins arrive at your home or to your construction site. Here’s everything you need to know about skip bin hire, courtesy of the experts at Ahoy Hire.

Ahoy Hire can provide you with the most reliable skip bin hire in Melbourne. However, to ensure the skip bin hiring process goes as smoothly as possible, there are a few things you should be aware of. This includes the size of the skip bin you’re going to need, how long you’ll need it for, and whether you will need a council permit to place your skip bin outside of your property.

What Size Skip Bin Do You Need?

At Ahoy Hire we offer four different skip bin sizing options to cater for all different kinds of projects. These sizes are:

  • 2m – 1.9m (L) x 1.8m (W) x 0.9m (H) – This skip bin is equivalent to two trailers or eight wheelie bins
  • 3m – 2.5m (L) x 1.8m (W) x 0.95m (H) – This skip bin is equivalent to three trailers or 12 wheelie bins
  • 4m – 3.3m (L) x 1.8m (W) x 0.95m (H) – This skip bin is equivalent to four trailers or 16 wheelie bins
  • 6m – 3.7m (L) x 1.8m (W) x 1.3m (H) – This skip bin is equivalent to six trailers of 24 wheelie bins

Based on our extensive experience, we find that the most common jobs require:

  • 3-4 cubic metres for bathroom demolitions or renovations
  • 4 cubic metres for kitchen demolitions or renovations
  • 4-6 cubic metres for moving house with a large clean-up
  • 2-3 cubic metres for moving house with a small clean-up
  • 6 cubic metres or more for a deceased estate

Of course, these are only estimates. When choosing your skip bins, make sure to take your individual circumstances into consideration and, if you’re unsure, it is recommended that you size up so that you don’t have to worry about the cost of a second skip halfway through clearing your waste.

What Kind of Waste Will You Be Using Your Skip Bin For?

At Ahoy Hire, we offer three different types of skip bins for different kinds of waste: general waste, heavy/builder waste, and prohibited material waste. Before hiring your skip bin, you should know which kind of waste you will be producing and, as such, which kind of skip bin you require.

General waste skips are suitable for household waste, which includes appliances, bric-a-brac, furniture, garden waste, construction waste, wood, drywall and metal. However, general waste is not suitable for asbestos, oils, chemicals, toxic waste, liquids, tyres, or food waste.

Heavy/builder waste skips are suitable for concrete, bricks, soil, rocks, tiles, pavers, general waste, and green waste. However, they are not suitable for asbestos, liquids, tyres, or food waste.

Prohibited materials skips are suitable for any materials containing asbestos, any form of insulation material, and any other prohibited or dangerous materials.

Where Will Your Skip Bin Be Placed?

Before hiring your skip bin, you need to be sure that there is room for it to be placed on your property, as well as ample space for truck access and skip loading requirements.

If your property does not have the necessary space to place your skip bin, you may require a council permit to enable you to place it outside of your property. These permit requirements and costs vary according to different municipalities. In particular, the cost of your permit will depend on where you’re placing the skip bin and how long it will be there for.

Because there are restrictions regarding placing objects like skip bins on council property, such as on footpaths, on the side of the road, of on nature strips, failing to obtain a council permit could result in a hefty fine and your skip bin might even be removed by the council.

As such, it’s essential that you organise this prior to the arrival of your skip bin, especially since, depending on your council, the process can be cumbersome. At the least, the process to obtain a council permit takes a few days; however, if there are complications, it could take as long as a few weeks.

Is the Waste Disposed of Ethically?

Before hiring your skip bins, you should keep your environmental conscience clear by ensuring that the company you choose disposes of your waste responsibly and ethically.

At Ahoy Hire, we transport your waste directly to a council-approved, EPA-licensed waste processing facility to ensure your waste is responsibly disposed of. Additionally, we even go to the trouble of sorting through your waste and removing metal, wood and bricks.
